Vacation Bible School: Calling all We set sail this Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.—noon for VBS! This morning during church, for all the kids who will be attending VBS, we want you to come and meet our Veggietales friends Sedgewick, Elliot and George. We thank Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for sponsoring our VBS this year. The Deacon & Paraprofessional Training Program (with the instructor Dr. Jim Boldt) will be offering the “Teaching the Faith” seminar on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at 8:00 a.m. at St. John-Rochester. This is one of the pre-seminary courses required for those interested in the new Specific Ministry Program which will be offered soon by the Michigan District. This course is designed to equip current and future Deacons and those serving in paraprofessional roles to be effective teachers of the Word of God and Christian doctrine and, above all, communicating the wonderful message of justification by faith alone because of the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The focus will be geared toward teaching adults. Participants may adapt the seminar and its content for teaching middle and high school students. The skills and principles learned can be used in teaching the Six Chief Parts of Christian doctrine. The seminar is not designed for teaching the faith to early childhood or elementary students. The cost for three sessions is $250. For more information on the Deacon & Paraprofessional Training Program, please contact Chris Brown, Registrar, at 810-220-1798 or email chrissbrown282@yahoo.com. The women’s group of Crown of Life is sponsoring a Monday night fellowship and salad potluck on Monday, September 8th beginning at 6:30 p.m. Ladies are asked to bring/preferably wear an apron…..our theme for the evening. Kathy Warriner is organizing this event, so you know there will be some surprises…! Watch for the sign-up sheet to be posted in the narthex. The Thrivent Financial member meeting scheduled for Sunday, August 24th has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date. Your year-to-date offering statements are available on the table in the narthex; please pick up your statement this weekend. Danelle Bieniek is participating in a half-marathon that will be held on November 16, 2008 in San Antonio. As a participant in the Team in Training program for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLSD), she is raising funds and requesting donations to assist in her fund-raising campaign. Each donation helps accelerate finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. More than 823,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. Use the following link to donate: http://pages.teamintraining.org/mi/rnrsahlf08/dbieniek. When you use this link you will receive confirmation of your donation, and Danelle will be notified also. Extraordinary Women Conference '08 (formerly Women of Faith) will meet on November 14-15 at Bethesda Christian Church in Sterling Heights, MI. Early Bird advanced group tickets are $39 (for groups of 10 +) and must register by September 26th. Individual tickets are $49. Please watch the bulletin board for information and a sign-up sheet. Concordia University-Ann Arbor is offering two wonderful opportunities for any kids interested in playing basketball in the fall. Beginning September 6th, all boys and girls ages 5-8 are invited to participate in an exciting new program called "Cardinal Kids Basketball." Also, September 21st marks the beginning of yet another season of the Sunday Night Youth Basketball League. This is for all boys in grades 4th-8th—a great opportunity to get ready for the upcoming basketball season. Posters with more information are posted in the Fellowship Hall. Lutheran City Ministries: The food items have all been signed up for September and October. Our help isn't needed in August because a volunteer from another church is supplying dinner on August 10th. We will use our donations for September and October. We still need 2 servers for each month. A special thanks to Bill and Linda Claussen and June Foster, who provided all the food for September. Do you see something “new” (or should we say something “old”) in the sanctuary? Look at the WINDOWS! What do you think? Many thanks to Jerry Griem, who installed these familiar windows in our sanctuary for us. These stained glass windows originally hung from 1923-1981 in St. John the Evangelist Church on East Grand Boulevard. St. John was razed and in 1984 the windows were purchased, restored and given to Crown of Life by several members, including Dick and Nancy Larsen. Our new drinking fountain has been installed! Many thanks to Jerry Griem who did the installation. Jerry also installed a new door bell and hung “The Last Supper” print in the office. The Zion Lutheran Church in Marshall will be hosting their 23rd Annual Taste of Germany dinner on Saturday, September 6th during the Marshall Historic Home Tour. Serving times are 4:00 p.m to 6:30 p.m. with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. The menu is roast pork, mashed potatoes, gravy, sauerkraut, German potato salad, buttered noodles, salads and pies. The Smart Discipline Program at St. Peter Lutheran-Macomb: Would you come out of your snug home for a guaranteed way to stop the fighting and bickering between your kids- or to get your kids to do what you ask the first time? If you answer is yes, we have a great deal for you! St. Peter’s is bringing in the Smart Discipline workshop by Larry J. Koenig, Ph.D. This program will also show you how to get your kids to clean up their rooms, do what you ask, instill positive beliefs, and stop the whining. Workshop is Thursday, August 21st 7-9 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, located at 17051 24 Mile Road in Macomb. For more information, call Rev. Ken Wagener at 586-781-3434. A free-will offering will be taken. Have you ever wondered what, as an Intentional Interim Minister, Pastor Prouty’s responsibilities are? There is an excellent article in the August/September 2008 issue of “Michigan In Touch.” Please pick up your copy this weekend. If you
are going out of town and want to find a local L.C.M.S. church to attend in your

SUMMER EVENTS CLOSE TO HOME:
If anyone has other ideas for “Close to Home” activities, please contact the church office; they will be put in future bulletins when there is room. Keep filling our paper recycle bin - Keep that paper coming! Copies of the current Crown newsletter are available on the credenza in the narthex. If you can’t pick yours up, call the church office and request that the newsletter be mailed to you; or you can email us at crownoflifelcms@aol.com to have the Crown newsletter emailed to you as a pdf. Minute Prayers are a wonderful tool to put God on your mind. Please take a moment to reflect on them each day. This is the second year Don Pell has put these spiritual thoughts together for our bulletin each week. “Michigan In Touch” is available in the narthex, along with copies of the “Portals of Prayer” and “Our Daily Bread." The Meyer Minute can be sent to you via email; just go to daleameyer.com and sign up. Cash for Printer Cartridges: Crown of Life has participated for the last few years in a fund raising program called “Empties 4 Cash,” which gives us up to $4 for each empty printer cartridge we send in. Now they have made it more convenient for us by providing postage paid envelopes with our membership number printed on the envelope. Just pick up an envelope from the display on the credenza, put your used cartridge(s) in and send it off in the regular mail. What could be easier - and we are making a few dollars for Crown of Life. Lutheran Special Education Ministries has a mission to enable children with special learning needs to receive a Christian Education. When we save and bring our Campbell product labels into church we are helping this organization to obtain teaching materials and supplies. There is a container on the table in the narthex to collect these labels, and a sheet listing the accepted labels that you can take home. There are also information sheets on the cabinet in the narthex showing the different labels that can earn free supplies for this organization. Bring in the ENTIRE LABEL for our collection as the information we need to send in from the labels has changed! AND: For all Prego and V8 products we are now required to turn in the lids instead of labels. Collect your lids in a small sandwich bag, mark on the bag which product the lids are from and deposit it in the drawer in the narthex. Keep these labels and lids coming—they are sent in 2 or 3 times a year and are greatly appreciated! RECYCLING: If you help out in our kitchen you will notice a container. We want to recycle all glass, plastic, metal, etc. that we use. Please rinse out the bottle/jar, try to take off the label and throw away the lid before putting the item in the bin. Placing these recyclable items in the bin and using our paper retriever will cut down on the amount of trash going into the dumpster and this translates into a smaller bill for waste disposal!! If
